What Is a Fractional Ecommerce Marketer? Scope, Hours and What It Costs in 2026

The word "fractional" means you buy a fraction of one person's working month. For an ecommerce brand that usually means 5 to about 30 hours of an experienced marketer who knows Amazon, Shopify, email or TikTok Shop. Here is what the role covers, the kinds you can hire, the published rates we checked on October 22, 2026, and how it differs from a fractional CMO, an agency and a full-time hire.

Short answer

A fractional ecommerce marketer is an experienced marketer who works for an online brand part time, for a set number of hours a month, running or directing the channels that sell the product, such as Amazon listings and ads, the Shopify store, email and TikTok Shop. The brand pays a monthly fee or an hourly rate instead of a salary and benefits. Published rates checked October 22, 2026 run $35 to $350 an hour and $1,250 to $5,000 a month; Evolve Media Agency charges $1,495 a month for about 15 hours, cancel any month.

[02] The Definition

Fractional Ecommerce Marketer, in Plain Words

Disclosure: Evolve Media Agency, which publishes this page, sells this service, and our prices appear in the survey with the others. Every other company's price is that company's own published figure on the date we checked, with the page it came from linked, or a ballpark estimate from public sources, labeled as such. Our prices are exact and come from our pricing page. No company on this page pays us and nothing here is paid placement.

Three things separate the role from other marketing help. First, the person is part time on purpose. You are not paying for 40 hours a week; you are paying for the 10, 15 or 30 hours of senior work the brand actually needs. Second, the hours are stated up front, either as a monthly plan with an hour count or as an hourly rate. Third, the person works on your business the way an employee would: they learn your products, your margins and your accounts, and they stay month after month instead of finishing one project and leaving.

The "ecommerce" part matters. A general fractional marketer may know brand strategy and paid social but not how an Amazon listing ranks, how a Shopify checkout leaks sales, or how a Klaviyo welcome flow is built. An ecommerce specialist works inside those tools. When people search "fractional CMO ecommerce meaning," they usually mean the senior, strategy-only version of this role; we cover that difference in the How It Differs section below.

[03] Types

Five Kinds of Fractional Ecommerce Marketer

Providers use the same word for very different jobs. Before you compare prices, decide which of these five you are buying. The price follows the seniority, and the seniority follows whether the person decides, does, or both.

Fractional CMO (decides and directs)

A senior leader who sets the plan, owns the budget and manages your team or vendors. Usually does little of the work. Go Fractional and Digital Authority Partners publish rates for this role.

Part-time ecommerce expert (decides and does)

One experienced person who picks the few things that move revenue and does them: rewrites listings, builds email flows, fixes tracking. This is what we sell.

Fractional channel specialist (does one channel)

A part-time Amazon ads manager, email marketer or Shopify specialist. Deep in one tool, not responsible for the whole plan.

Interim marketing leader (full time, short term)

Covers a gap while you hire, usually full time for a few months. Go Fractional publishes interim CMOs from $20,000 a month, so this is not a part-time budget.

Hourly freelancer (does tasks you assign)

Found on marketplaces such as Upwork and FreeUp. Cheapest per hour, but you write the brief, manage the work and own the plan.

[04] Scope and Hours

What the Role Covers and How Many Hours It Takes

Scope depends on the type above, but for a $1M to $10M brand the work tends to fall into the same handful of jobs. A good fractional marketer picks from this list every month based on what is costing the most sales right now, not a fixed checklist.

Marketplace content

Amazon titles, bullets, backend search terms and A+ copy; Shopify product pages. The work that changes how often a visitor buys.

Email and retention

Welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase flows in Klaviyo or Brevo, plus a calendar of campaigns.

Measurement

GA4 and Search Console set up correctly, a monthly report on one page, and a baseline so next month can be judged.

Ad direction

Reading Amazon or Meta ad reports and telling the person or agency who runs the ads what to change. Daily ad management is usually a separate job.

Vendor and team coordination

Briefing a photographer, a designer or an ads agency, and checking the work against the brief.

The priority list

A written list of what to fix next and why, updated every month. In our experience, this is the part founders value most, because it ends the guessing.

How many hours? The published monthly plans we checked range from up to 5 hours (Websults' smallest plan) to about 29 hours (Go Fractional's starting CMO retainer). In our experience, most brands under $10M need 10 to 20 hours of hands-on work a month. Somewhere between about 60 and 100 hours a month, every month, a full-time hire starts to cost less, as the math in the next section shows.

Example 15-hour month (illustration, not a fixed plan)Hours
Amazon listing review and copy fixes for two top products5 hours
Email flow repair or one new flow4 hours
Reading ad and sales reports, notes to the ads manager2 hours
Monthly report and updated priority list2 hours
Calls and same-business-day questions2 hours
Total, example month15 hours

Against a full-time hire, as an example. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook puts median pay for advertising, promotions and marketing managers at $165,780 a year (May 2025). Its employer cost release for June 2026 shows private employers paying $46.89 an hour in total compensation against $32.82 in wages, a ratio of about 1.43. Multiply the two and a median full-time marketing manager costs about $236,850 a year, or $19,740 a month, before recruiting, equipment and software.

15 hours a month, example

Evolve $1,495. At Go Fractional's $205 ecommerce average, $3,075. At Digital Authority Partners' $350, $5,250. FreeUp at $35 to $75, $525 to $1,125.

30 hours a month, example

Evolve $1,495 plus three 5-hour blocks at $495 is $2,980. Go Fractional's $5,000 floor covers about 29 hours. At $350 an hour, $10,500.

A year at 15 hours, example

Evolve $17,940, against about $236,850 for the median full-time manager.

Break-even, example

$19,740 a month buys about 96 hours at $205 or about 56 hours at $350. Past roughly 60 to 100 hours a month of senior work, every month, full time is cheaper.

[06] When You Need One

When You Need a Fractional Marketer and When You Do Not

You need one: the founder is the bottleneck

Sales are steady, the product works, and marketing only happens when the founder finds a free evening. A part-time expert turns that into a scheduled month of work.

You need one: you have vendors but no one directing them

An ads agency, a photographer and a designer each do their piece, and nobody checks the whole. A fractional marketer writes the briefs and reads the results.

You need one: you are not ready for a $236,850 hire

You need senior judgment but only 10 to 20 hours of it a month. That is the gap this role was made for.

You do not: you are under about $20,000 a month in sales

Even $1,495 a month is a large share of margin at that size. Use free guides and do the first fixes yourself.

You do not: the product or listing is the problem

If the price, reviews or main image lose the sale, strategy will not save it. Fix the listing first.

You do not: you need 30 or more hours every week

That is a job. Hire full time or buy an agency retainer that covers the volume. Our guide to the first ops hire versus an agency walks through that choice.

You do not: you cannot name the job

If you cannot write the three outcomes and the number you will judge them by, the first month goes to finding that out. Write them first.

[07] Nearest Neighbors

How It Differs From a Fractional CMO, an Agency and a Full-Time Hire

The nearest term is fractional CMO, and many providers use the two interchangeably. The practical difference is who does the work. A fractional CMO decides and directs. A fractional ecommerce marketer, in the hands-on sense, decides and also does. The comparison below uses only the published figures above.

Fractional ecommerce marketer

Does the work?Yes. Builds the flow, rewrites the listing, sets up the tracking.
Typical hours10 to 20 a month.
Published priceEvolve $1,495 for about 15 hours; FreeUp $35 to $75 an hour; Upwork $65 to $220.
Best forA $1M to $10M brand where the founder still runs marketing.

Fractional CMO

Does the work?Mostly no. Sets strategy, owns the budget, directs a team or vendors.
Typical hoursAbout 12 to 29 a month on the published plans; some providers quote one to three days a week instead.
Published priceGo Fractional from $5,000 a month; Digital Authority Partners $350 an hour; Websults $2,500 to $4,000.
Best forA brand with a team or several vendors that needs a leader.

Full-time marketing manager

Does the work?Yes, and is there every day.
Typical hoursAbout 173 a month (2,080 a year).
Published priceAbout $236,850 a year loaded at the federal median, before recruiting and equipment.
Best forA brand that needs 30 or more hours a week, every week.

Versus an agency retainer

An agency gives you a team and usually owns one channel, such as ads or creative, at a monthly fee. A fractional marketer is one person across channels. Many brands use both: the agency runs the ads, the fractional marketer sets the priorities and checks the results.

Versus a freelancer

A freelancer does the task you assign. A fractional marketer decides which tasks matter. If you already know exactly what to do, a freelancer is cheaper.

Versus a consultant

A consultant usually delivers a plan and leaves. A fractional marketer stays and carries the plan out month to month.

[08] Before You Hire

Five Questions to Ask Any Fractional Marketer

1

How many hours does the monthly price buy?

If the answer is "as needed," you cannot compare it to anyone else. Websults, Go Fractional and Evolve state hours.

2

Do you do the work or direct someone else?

This one answer explains most of the price gap between $100 and $350 an hour.

3

What happens to unused hours?

At Evolve they roll forward one month. Ask everyone else, because unused hours are where a monthly fee quietly costs more.

4

What does an extra hour cost?

Evolve sells 5-hour blocks at $495. Without a stated rate, a busy month can be billed at any figure.

5

What is the term and notice period?

MarketerHire and Evolve are month to month. Get the notice period in writing before you start.
