Short answer

At $100,000 a month in sales and $15,000 in ad spend (an example), an agency charging 5% of sales costs $5,000 a month. 15% of ad spend costs $2,250, a $3,000 retainer costs $3,000, and Evolve Media Agency's published PPC management costs $1,995. A $78,000 in-house hire, loaded at the federal 1.43 employer cost ratio, costs about $9,295. Change any number below to see your own.

The formulas, in plain words

Percent of sales: monthly sales x fee %.

Percent of ad spend: ad spend x fee %, or the floor if that is higher.

Flat retainer: the same amount every month, whatever your sales or spend.

Evolve PPC management: $995 a month if ad spend is $10,000 or less, $1,995 if it is $50,000 or less, and quoted by hours above $50,000.

In-house hire: salary x multiplier / 12 for the month.

Every line: yearly is monthly x 12; share of sales is monthly cost / monthly sales; per SKU is monthly cost / SKU count. The bar shows each cost against the highest one.

[03] Where the Defaults Come From

Every Default, and Whether a Source Backs It

The defaults are examples, not market averages. No one publishes a reliable average agency fee, so we used round numbers and name the source behind each.

DefaultWhere it comes from
5% of sales (example)No agency we checked on October 22, 2026 publishes a fee on total sales. Kenji ROI publishes 5% of revenue growth (over a baseline), and the AMZ Dudes 2026 pricing article claims 3% to 10% of revenue with no source. 5% is a round example inside that claim.
15% of ad spend (sourced example)WebFX's own pricing page charges the greater of $975 or 15% of spend for accounts spending $5,001 to $30,000 a month, checked Oct 22, 2026. Clear Ads publishes 7% (or $2,500, whichever is more).
$1,500 floor (example)SalesDuo's June 2026 pricing guide puts the usual monthly minimum at $1,500 to $2,500; Clear Ads publishes $2,500. We used the low end.
$3,000 retainer (example)Our in-house vs agency cost breakdown puts boutique full-service retainers at $2,500 to $5,000 a month, and Levanta's November 2025 guide gives flat fees of $1,500 to $5,000. Those are estimates, not rate cards, so $3,000 is an example.
Evolve PPC management (exact)$995 a month for up to $10,000 in monthly ad spend (10 hours) and $1,995 a month for up to $50,000 (20 hours), from our PPC management page. Above $50,000 we quote by the hours the account needs. $1,000 minimum monthly ad spend, ad spend billed by Amazon, month to month, 100% upfront.
$78,000 salary (example)No federal table covers "Amazon account manager." $78,000 sits inside the ranges our in-house cost breakdown gives for a mid-level PPC specialist ($75,000 to $100,000) and a junior brand manager ($65,000 to $85,000). Those are our estimates; use your real number.
1.43 loaded multiplier (sourced)The Bureau of Labor Statistics Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026 (published September 9, 2026) shows private employers paying $46.89 an hour in total compensation, of which $32.82 is wages. $46.89 divided by $32.82 is 1.4287, rounded to 1.43. It covers paid leave, insurance, retirement and payroll taxes, but not recruiting, equipment or software.
[04] How to Read the Results

The Five Lines Do Not Buy the Same Work

A lower number is not automatically the better deal. Check what each line covers before you compare them.

Percent of sales usually means full service

Agencies that charge on sales tend to run the whole account. The fee rises with sales, including sales the agency did not cause, like a seasonal spike.

Percent of ad spend rewards a bigger budget

The fee grows with spend, whether or not profit does. Ask what happens when the right move is to cut spend. The floor means small accounts pay more than the headline rate.

A flat retainer is easy to budget

You know the bill in advance. Ask how many hours it buys and what happens in a launch month, and get the answer in writing.

Our line covers PPC only

Our $995 and $1,995 fees buy Sponsored ads management for a set number of hours. They do not include listing copy, photos or video, which we sell as separate fixed-price projects. Compare it with other PPC-only quotes, not with a full-service retainer.

An in-house hire is one person

One salary buys one set of skills and no cover for vacations. Most hires still need software and outside creative work, so the loaded number here is the floor of what a hire costs.

Per SKU shows what each product carries

If a few products earn most of your sales, the per-SKU cost on the rest can exceed what they make. That is a reason to narrow the scope.

[05] When Not to Pay

When None of These Lines Is Worth Paying Yet

Every line is over 10% of your sales

If even the cheapest line is above about 10% of sales, fix the listing and run a small Sponsored Products account yourself first.

Your ad spend is under $1,000 a month

That is below our minimum and most published floors. A $1,500 floor on $800 of spend is almost double the spend. Use software until spend grows.

Your listing converts poorly

Every model sends traffic to the same product page. If the main image, bullets, price and reviews are weak, the first dollar belongs to the listing.

You cannot say what the money should do

Write the results you want and the number you will judge them by. Without that, you cannot tell whether any fee paid off.

Who Built This and What to Read Next

Evolve Media Agency is a three-person ecommerce content and growth agency in Colorado, founded in 2017 by Ian Smith. It works with Amazon, Shopify and TikTok Shop brands doing roughly $1M to $10M a year, sells fixed-price projects and flat monthly fees with no long-term contract, publishes its prices on its site (see the pricing page and each service page), and is paid 100% upfront with no net terms. We built this calculator because the first question on most of our calls is what an agency should cost. The math runs in your browser and nothing is stored.

[07] FAQ

Agency Cost Calculator Questions

How much does an Amazon agency cost a month?
It depends on the model. As an example at $100,000 in monthly sales and $15,000 in ad spend: 5% of sales is $5,000, 15% of spend is $2,250, and our PPC management is $1,995. Boutique retainers run $2,500 to $5,000 by our estimate.
Is it cheaper to hire in-house or use an agency?
Below a full-time workload, an agency usually costs less. A $78,000 hire at the federal 1.43 ratio is about $111,540 a year, or $9,295 a month, before recruiting, equipment and software.
What is a loaded salary?
The full yearly cost of an employee: base pay plus paid leave, insurance, retirement and payroll taxes. BLS June 2026 figures show private employers paying $46.89 in total compensation per $32.82 in wages, about 1.43.
Why does the calculator use 1.43 and not 1.25 to 1.30?
Many guides, including our in-house cost breakdown, add 25% to 30%. The BLS private-employer average is about 43% because it counts paid leave and every benefit. If your benefits are lean, lower the multiplier.
What percentage of ad spend do Amazon agencies charge?
Only two agencies we checked on October 22, 2026 publish one. Clear Ads charges 7% of spend (or $2,500 a month, whichever is more), and WebFX charges 15% on its $5,001 to $30,000 tier, with 12% and 10% above that. Most agencies quote the percentage on a call.
Do agencies charge a percentage of total sales?
Some full-service agencies do, but we found none that publish the rate. Kenji ROI publishes 5% of revenue growth, which is growth over a baseline, not total sales. Enter the rate from your proposal.
What does Evolve Media Agency charge for PPC?
$995 a month up to $10,000 in ad spend (10 hours), $1,995 up to $50,000 (20 hours), quoted by hours above that, or $745 for a single ASIN. $1,000 minimum monthly spend, month to month, 100% upfront.
Does this calculator save my numbers?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored. Refresh the page and the example defaults come back.
