Amazon PPC Agency vs PPC Software vs a Freelancer: Which One Fits Your Ad Spend

The right answer depends on two numbers: what you spend on Amazon ads each month and how many products you advertise. We loaded the pricing pages of five PPC software tools (plus Pacvue, which publishes no price), Upwork's freelancer rate page and three agency rate cards on October 22, 2026, then did the math at $3,000, $15,000 and $50,000 a month in spend.

Last reviewed October 23, 2026Prices checked October 2026By Ian Smith

Short answer

Under about $3,000 a month in ad spend and 20 products, buy software: Teikametrics is $149 a month, Ad Badger $275, Helium 10 Ads $279 plus 2% of spend. From $3,000 to $10,000, a freelancer at Upwork's $20 to $45 an hour works if you can manage one. From about $10,000, an agency is cheaper than it looks: Evolve Media Agency charges a flat $1,995 a month up to $50,000 in spend, and WebFX the greater of $975 or 15% of spend up to $30,000. Pacvue does not publish a price.

[02] The Short Answer

Spend and SKU Count Decide It, Not the Sales Pitch

Disclosure: We are Evolve Media Agency and we wrote this comparison. We sell Amazon PPC management, so we have a stake in the answer, and we say below where software alone or a freelancer is the better buy. Every software price, freelancer rate and agency fee for another company comes from that company's own page on Oct 22, 2026, linked, and is labeled published, ballpark estimate or quote only. Our prices are exact and come from our pricing page. No company on this page pays us.

PPC means pay-per-click: Amazon's Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display ads, where you pay each time a shopper clicks. All three options on this page run the same ads in the same Amazon account. What changes is who decides what to do and who does the clicking.

Software changes bids and adds new keywords from your search reports (keyword harvesting) on rules you set. It is cheap and fast, and it does nothing you did not tell it to do. A freelancer is one person, paid by the hour or a flat monthly amount, who runs the account and usually works inside your software. An agency is a team on a monthly fee that owns the strategy, the build and the reporting, and normally brings its own tools.

Two numbers matter most. The first is monthly ad spend, because every fee is easier to judge as a share of it. The second is SKU count, meaning how many separate products (each with its own ASIN, Amazon's product ID) you advertise. Ten products with a few campaigns each are a weekend job. Two hundred products across variations are a full-time job.

Under $3,000 a month in spend, fewer than 20 SKUs

Software, run by you. At this size any agency fee is 30% or more of your spend. Teikametrics at $149 or Ad Badger at $275 handles the bids; you spend two to four hours a week on search terms.

$3,000 to $10,000 a month, 20 to 75 SKUs

Software plus a freelancer, or a flat-fee agency at the low end. A freelancer for 10 to 15 hours a month at $20 to $45 an hour is $200 to $675, plus your tool.

$10,000 to $50,000 a month, or 75+ SKUs

An agency on a flat fee. The fee falls to 4% to 20% of spend, and you stop being the person who checks the work.

Above $50,000 a month

An agency with a team, often on a percentage of spend, plus enterprise software such as Pacvue. Flat fees at our level stop buying enough hours.

What Each Option Costs, Includes and Asks of You

PPC software

Price (published)Teikametrics $149 a month on the annual plan, $179 monthly, up to $10,000 in spend; above that custom plus 3% of spend over $10,000. Helium 10 Ads comes in the Diamond plan at $279 a month yearly ($359 monthly) plus a 2% fee on managed spend. Perpetua $695 a month up to $10,000, then $695 plus an unstated percentage. Ad Badger $275 to $1,830 by spend tier. Scale Insights $78 to $688 a month by automated ASIN count, or 1% of spend.
What is includedRule-based or AI bid changes, keyword harvesting, negative keyword suggestions (search terms you block), dayparting (bids by hour of day) and dashboards. No strategy, no listing review, no one to call when sales drop.
Who it fitsOwners or staff who already understand PPC and have two to four hours a week. Small catalogs. Brands that have had a clean restructure and need upkeep.
ContractMonthly or annual. Teikametrics, Ad Badger and Scale Insights offer free trials; Helium 10 discounts the yearly plan by up to 20%.

Freelancer

Price (ballpark)Upwork's PPC specialist cost page (upwork.com, not linked because it blocks automated checks) shows $20 to $45 an hour: entry $20 to $25, intermediate $25 to $35, expert $35 to $45. The same page's FAQ says $25 to $50. That band covers all PPC channels, not only Amazon. Plus your software.
What is includedWhatever the two of you agree to. Usually campaign builds, weekly search-term work and a monthly report. Quality ranges widely; you are the quality control.
Who it fits$3,000 to $10,000 a month in spend, an owner who can read a search-term report well enough to check the work, and a catalog one person can hold in their head.
ContractHourly or a fixed monthly amount through the marketplace. Easy to start and stop. If they leave, the knowledge leaves with them, so keep the account in your name.

Agency

Price (published)Evolve Media Agency: $995 a month up to $10,000 in spend (10 hours), $1,995 up to $50,000 (20 hours), $995 one-time audit and restructure, $1,000 minimum spend. WebFX: $975 a month up to $5,000 in spend, then the greater of a flat fee or 15%, 12% or 10% of spend. Sequence Commerce: from $900 a month, scoped after an audit.
What is includedStrategy, structure, weekly search-term and bid work, reporting on ACoS and TACoS, and a named person. ACoS is ad spend divided by ad sales. TACoS is ad spend divided by total sales, ads plus organic.
Who it fits$10,000 a month and up, larger catalogs, launches, and owners who want to stop checking the account.
ContractEvolve is month to month, 100% upfront, with ad spend billed by Amazon to your card. WebFX publishes spend tiers but no term on its pricing page; Sequence promises no spend-based markups. Ask every agency for the term and notice in writing.
Pacvue: the prompt "amazon ppc agency vs pacvue" compares two different things. Pacvue is enterprise software that large brands and agencies run, not a service. Its pricing page refused our request on Oct 22, 2026 and we found no published price, so treat it as quote only. Many agencies at the $50,000-plus level use Pacvue or similar tools inside the fee.
[04] When Each Wins

The Situations Where Each Option Is the Better Buy

Software alone wins: you already know PPC

If you or someone on staff can read a search-term report and knows why a keyword is wasting money, software at $78 to $339 a month does the repetitive bid work and an agency adds little.

Software alone wins: one or two hero products

A single product with a few dozen proven keywords does not need weekly strategy. Scale Insights' Scale 5 plan covers five automated ASINs for $78 a month. Set the rules, check weekly, and spend the savings on the listing.

A freelancer wins: you can supervise but cannot spare the hours

You know enough to check the work and want 10 to 15 hours a month done for you at $200 to $675. Keep admin access, ask for a weekly change log, and pair them with a tool you own.

An agency wins: you have stopped checking

If nobody has opened the search-term report in a month, software has been spending on rules nobody reviewed. That is the point where a named person with stated hours earns the fee.

An agency wins: spend above $10,000 or a large catalog

Flat fees fall as a share of spend: our $1,995 is 13% of $15,000 and 4% of $50,000. Seventy-five products across variations need structure, naming and budget rules that a freelancer working 10 hours a month cannot keep up.

An agency wins: launches

A new product needs a launch plan, a bid strategy for the first 60 days and fast reaction to early data. Software has no history to work from yet.

[05] The Math

What Each Option Costs at $3,000, $15,000 and $50,000 a Month

These are worked examples using the published prices above, checked Oct 22, 2026. Freelancer figures are ballpark estimates built from Upwork's hourly band. The ad spend itself is on top in every case and is not included. Percentages are the fee divided by monthly ad spend.

Example: $3,000 a month in spend

SoftwareTeikametrics $149 (5%). Ad Badger Starter $275 (9%). Helium 10 Ads $279 plus 2% of $3,000 ($60) = $339 (11%). Scale Insights Scale 10 at $98 for 10 automated ASINs. Perpetua $695 (23%).
Freelancer8 hours at $20 to $45 = $160 to $360, plus Teikametrics $149 = $309 to $509 (10% to 17%). Ballpark estimate.
AgencyWebFX $975 (33%). Evolve $995 (33%). Sequence from $900 (30%).
VerdictSoftware. A third of spend going to management only makes sense for a launch or a broken account. Our own advice at this size is a one-time $995 audit and restructure, then software.

Example: $15,000 a month in spend

SoftwareAd Badger Basic $440 (3%). Helium 10 Ads $279 plus 2% of $15,000 ($300) = $579 (4%). Scale Insights 1% plan = $150. Teikametrics Advanced: custom base plus 3% of the $5,000 over $10,000 ($150). Perpetua Growth: $695 plus an unstated percentage.
Freelancer15 hours at $25 to $45 = $375 to $675, plus Ad Badger $440 = $815 to $1,115 (5% to 7%). Ballpark estimate.
AgencyEvolve PPC Management Plus $1,995 (13%). WebFX the greater of $975 or 15% = $2,250 (15%). Sequence scoped after an audit.
VerdictClose. The freelancer route saves about $900 to $1,200 a month if you can supervise. The agency route costs more and takes the supervising off your plate.

Example: $50,000 a month in spend

SoftwareAd Badger Professional $660 (1%). Scale Insights 1% plan = $500. Teikametrics: 3% of $40,000 = $1,200 plus a custom base. Helium 10: $279 plus 2% of $50,000 ($1,000) = $1,279 on Diamond; its Enterprise plan, from $1,499 a month billed annually, is built for $25,000 and up.
Freelancer30 hours at $35 to $45 = $1,050 to $1,350, plus Ad Badger $660 = $1,710 to $2,010 (3% to 4%). Ballpark estimate, and more than one person usually holds that many hours.
AgencyEvolve $1,995 (4%). WebFX the greater of $4,500 or 12% = $6,000 (12%). Sequence's own homepage says to hire an agency above $20,000 a month in spend.
VerdictAgency. A flat fee costs about what a freelancer plus software does and brings a team. Above $50,000 we quote by hours, and percentage-of-spend agencies start to fit.
The hidden line item is your time. Software still needs a person. As an example, four hours a week of your time at a value of $50 an hour is about $870 a month. Add that to the software line before you compare it to an agency fee.
[06] SKU Count

Why the Number of Products Changes the Answer

Spend tells you what a fee costs as a share. SKU count tells you how much work there is. Scale Insights prices by it, which makes the effect easy to see: 5 automated ASINs are $78 a month, 20 are $178, 50 are $388 and 100 are $688. A brand spending $5,000 across 100 ASINs has far more campaigns to watch than one spending $15,000 on 3 ASINs.

As a rule of thumb: under 20 advertised SKUs, one person with software can keep up in two to four hours a week. From 20 to 75, the weekly search-term work starts to take a full day. Above 75, especially with size or color variations, you need naming rules, portfolio budgets and someone whose job it is. That is when a freelancer gets stretched and an agency, or an in-house hire, starts to pay.

Products advertisedWhat usually fits
1 to 20 SKUsSoftware. Add a freelancer or agency only for a launch or a rebuild.
20 to 75 SKUsSoftware plus a freelancer under $10,000 in spend; a flat-fee agency above it.
75+ SKUsAgency or in-house hire at any spend above about $5,000. Below that, cut the advertised catalog to the products that sell.
[07] When Neither

When You Should Not Pay Any of Them Yet

Your spend is under $1,000 a month

Amazon charges no monthly fee to run Sponsored ads. Start with Amazon's own console and a weekly search-term review. Our minimum spend is $1,000 a month for this reason.

The listing does not convert

Every click from every option lands on the same page. If the main image, bullets, price or reviews are weak, fix the listing first. Our listing copy is $495 and the listing audit is free.

You cannot say what a sale is worth

If you do not know your margin after Amazon fees, nobody can set a target ACoS. Work out the break-even ACoS first: your margin before ad cost, as a percentage of price.

You want someone to guarantee an ACoS

Any tool or person can hit a low ACoS by cutting spend until sales fall. Judge on TACoS and total sales, not one ratio.

The product is out of stock or about to be

Ads on a product that cannot ship waste spend and can hurt ranking. Fix inventory, then advertise.

[08] Before You Choose

Five Questions That Pick the Right Option

1

What is my monthly ad spend, and what will it be in six months?

Pick for where you are going. A flat fee that is 33% of spend today might be 10% after a launch.

2

How many products do I advertise?

Count ASINs with spend in the last 30 days, not your whole catalog.

3

Who will read the search-term report every week?

If the answer is nobody, software alone will keep spending on rules no one reviews.

4

Do I own the ad account and the software login?

Whatever you choose, the Amazon account and the tool should be in your name, with the helper added as a user.

5

What would I do with the hours I get back?

If the answer is product development or wholesale deals, the management fee is buying something. If not, run it yourself.

[10] FAQ

Agency vs Software Questions

Should I hire an Amazon PPC agency or just use software?
Under about $3,000 a month in ad spend and 20 products, use software such as Teikametrics ($149 a month) or Ad Badger ($275) and run it yourself. Above about $10,000 in spend or 75 products, a flat-fee agency usually costs 4% to 20% of spend and removes the weekly work from your plate. Between those, a freelancer plus software is often the cheapest workable option.
How much does Amazon PPC software cost in 2026?
Published prices on October 22, 2026: Teikametrics $149 a month (annual) up to $10,000 in spend; Helium 10 Ads in Diamond at $279 a month yearly plus 2% of managed spend; Perpetua $695 up to $10,000 in spend; Ad Badger $275 to $1,830 by spend tier; Scale Insights $78 to $688 by automated ASIN count, or 1% of spend. Pacvue does not publish.
How much does an Amazon PPC freelancer cost?
Upwork's PPC specialist cost page shows $20 to $45 an hour, with expert-level at $35 to $45, and its own FAQ says $25 to $50. That range covers all PPC channels. At 10 to 15 hours a month that is about $200 to $675, plus the software they work in. Treat these as ballpark estimates.
Is an Amazon PPC agency better than Pacvue?
They are different things. Pacvue is enterprise software; an agency is a service that may run Pacvue or another tool for you. Pacvue publishes no price we could load. If you have an in-house team at high spend, software like Pacvue may be enough. If you do not have the team, you need people, not a platform.
What does an Amazon PPC agency cost compared to software?
Published examples: Evolve Media Agency $995 a month up to $10,000 in spend and $1,995 up to $50,000; WebFX $975 up to $5,000, then the greater of a flat fee or 15%, 12% or 10% of spend. At $15,000 in spend that is $1,995 or $2,250, against $440 to $579 for Ad Badger or Helium 10 Ads.
When is software alone enough for Amazon PPC?
When someone on your team already understands PPC and has two to four hours a week, when you advertise one or a few hero products, or when the account was recently restructured and needs only upkeep. In those cases a tool at $78 to $339 a month does the repetitive bid work.
What is TACoS and why does it matter when choosing?
TACoS is total advertising cost of sales: ad spend divided by all sales, including organic. ACoS divides ad spend by ad sales only. A tool or person can lower ACoS by cutting spend while total sales fall. TACoS shows whether ads are growing the business, so ask any option to report it.
What does Evolve Media Agency charge for Amazon PPC?
A one-time PPC Audit and Restructure at $995 (10 hours). Management is $995 a month up to $10,000 in spend (10 hours) or $1,995 a month up to $50,000 (20 hours). Minimum ad spend is $1,000 a month, ad spend is billed by Amazon, and it is month to month, 100% upfront.
