On Amazon the shopper reads your listing to decide. On TikTok they have already decided, in a video, and your listing's job is to not talk them out of it.
That difference explains almost every rule in this post. A TikTok Shop listing is rarely the first thing a buyer sees. It is the card that slides up under a creator's video, then a product page opened with a thumb, on a phone, by someone who was scrolling for entertainment thirty seconds ago. The listing does not have to persuade. It has to confirm, fast, and it has to satisfy TikTok's own quality scoring so the card gets shown in the first place.
Evolve Media Agency sells listing content and product photography for TikTok Shop and Amazon, and Bear Basics, the brand I own, sells on both. The requirements below are quoted from TikTok's Seller Center guidelines as of September 15, 2026; the recommendations are what we do and are marked as ours. TikTok changes listing rules often, so the Seller Center page is the tiebreaker on any spec.
If you are setting up a shop from scratch, the TikTok Shop launch guide covers everything before the listing. This post starts at the product page.
The Product Card Is The Listing
Trace how a TikTok Shop order actually happens. A creator's video plays. A small card appears at the bottom: main image, the first line or so of the title, the price, sometimes a strikethrough and a sold count. The viewer taps it. A half-sheet product page opens over the video with the image carousel, title, price, reviews summary and a buy button. Most buyers never scroll below that.
So the listing is judged in this order: main image at thumbnail size, first 35 or so characters of the title, price, review count and rating, then the carousel. The description, attributes and everything below the fold matter for TikTok's scoring and for the minority who scroll, and they matter for search. They are almost never what closes the sale.
Product card. The compact product unit TikTok renders under shoppable videos, in LIVE, in the Shop tab and in search results: main image, truncated title, price and social proof. It is the same listing data as the product page, cropped hard. Optimizing a TikTok Shop listing is mostly optimizing what survives the crop.
What Transfers From Amazon And What Does Not
| Listing Element | Amazon Habit | TikTok Shop Reality | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | Keyword-dense, 150-200 characters, every attribute | 25-200 allowed, ~35 visible on the card; search matches title terms but the card truncates | Rewrite: front-load, shorten |
| Main image | Pure white, product 85%, no text | Clean white or neutral, no text or logos, product at least 80%; newer guidance favors a borderless 3:4 first image | Mostly transfers; test a 3:4 crop |
| Image stack | Seven to nine with infographics | Five minimum for Good tier, up to nine; no collages; simple benefit graphics OK | Transfers with edits |
| Bullets | Five persuasive bullets | No bullet field; description is one block, 80+ chars for tier, 500+ recommended | Rewrite as a short caption-style description |
| Backend keywords | 250 bytes of search terms | None; search reads title, attributes, category and video | Does not exist; put terms in title and attributes |
| Video | Optional, landscape | One listing video slot, vertical, and it is the native format of the whole platform | Required in practice; reshoot vertical |
| A+ Content | Modules below the fold | Description can hold images; no module system | Repurpose one or two A+ graphics into the description |
| Reviews | Earned slowly; Vine | Velocity is a ranking input; photo and video reviews surface on the page and in search | Transfers, with more urgency |
The short version: images and reviews transfer, titles and copy need a rewrite, and video goes from optional to load-bearing. The high-converting Amazon listing guide is the reference for the habits in column two; the rest of this post is column three.
The Listing Quality Tier
TikTok scores each listing into Poor, Fair or Good, and the tier affects distribution in search and recommendations. The rules are published in Seller Center, which is unusual for a marketplace and worth taking literally.
Two things about this that surprise Amazon sellers. First, the image count is a hard gate: a listing with four beautiful images is capped at Fair, and a listing with five adequate ones can reach Good. Second, attributes are a hard gate too. On Amazon, missing attributes cost you some filter visibility. On TikTok, a fashion listing without a size chart or a skincare listing without the required usage field cannot reach Good regardless of what else is right. Check the listing's tier in Seller Center under product management before touching anything else, because the fix is usually an empty field rather than a rewrite.
Titles: 200 Characters, 35 That Matter
TikTok's guidance: titles between 25 and 200 characters, including brand, product type, key features, and size or quantity where relevant, with no clickbait and no substituted characters. Search matches on title terms, so the terms matter. But the card truncates at roughly 35 characters on most phones, and the product page shows about two lines before a "more" tap.
So the structure is front-loaded, with each segment earning its position by whether a scroller needs it to recognize the product.
Two more title notes. Do not stuff synonyms the way Amazon backend keywords trained you to; there is no backend field, and a title that reads like a keyword list is what TikTok's guidance calls unclear. And keep the title stable once creators are posting, because their videos and captions reference the product by the name on the card, and a renamed product breaks that recognition.
The Main Image
The main image is the thumbnail on the card, in search, in the cart and in LIVE. TikTok's rules for it are close to Amazon's: clean white or neutral background, no text, stickers, logos or promotional graphics, product filling at least 80% of the frame, minimum 600x600 with 800x800 or higher recommended, JPEG or PNG under 5 MB. Newer guidance from TikTok, reported by several photography vendors, favors a borderless 3:4 first image over a 1:1 square, which makes sense for a vertical app.
Where it differs from Amazon is what the image has to do. On Amazon the main image wins a click against seven competitors in a grid. On TikTok it has to be recognizable at about a quarter of that size, at the bottom of a video, by someone who just saw the product in a creator's hand. Recognition beats beauty.
- Shoot the product the way creators hold it. If the balm tin is always shown open with the lid beside it in videos, the main image should match. A sealed box on white can fail recognition on the card.
- Fill the frame harder than you would for Amazon. Eighty percent is the floor; at card size, 90% reads better.
- One product, one unit, unless it is a multi-pack. Props and bundles on the main image are a rejection risk and a recognition problem.
- Test the 3:4 crop against 1:1. TikTok's newer guidance favors it; your card click-through will tell you if it holds for your product.
The Amazon main image guide covers the craft of the shot itself; the differences above are the TikTok overlay on it.
Images Two Through Nine
Five is the tier minimum. Nine is the cap. Our default is eight, in this order, and the order is the point because the carousel is swiped on a phone and most viewers see three or four.
| Slot | Shot | Job |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Main image, clean background, product at 80-90% | Recognition on the card; tier compliance |
| 2 | Product in use, in a hand or on a person, vertical-friendly composition | Confirms what the video showed |
| 3 | Scale reference (hand, common object, dimensions overlaid simply) | The number one return reason on TikTok is "smaller than expected" |
| 4 | Texture or detail close-up | Answers "what is it actually like" |
| 5 | Simple benefit graphic: three short callouts, large type, no clutter | The one infographic; keep it legible at phone width |
| 6 | What is in the box, laid out flat | Kills "missing parts" complaints |
| 7 | Variant lineup (all colors, scents, sizes in one frame) | Helps the variant picker |
| 8 | Ingredients, materials or spec panel, photographed or set as clean text | Trust and compliance; the shot that ends the scroll |
Rules that get images rejected: watermarks, other platforms' logos, pricing or promotional text, collages or mosaics (each angle needs its own slot), and, per two 2026 sources, AI-generated product images without a visible disclosure label. Check the current AI disclosure requirement in Seller Center before using generated imagery, and if you use it, label it. The listing image stack guide covers the reasoning behind the sequence, which holds across both marketplaces.
The Listing Video
TikTok's product listing policy allows one video per listing, shown in the image carousel. On a platform where every buyer arrived through a video, an empty video slot is the single most common gap on Amazon sellers' TikTok listings, and it is the easiest to fill because you already have creator content.
MP4 or MOV, H.264. TikTok's policy page and third-party guides state different file-size limits; the uploader shows the current one, so export at a sensible size and let it tell you.
The carousel viewer is deciding, not browsing. The product in use in the first three seconds, one objection answered, done.
A creator clip you hold rights to, trimmed to the demo, with captions burned in and no creator-specific offer or code. It matches what the buyer just saw.
A 16:9 Amazon video letterboxed in a vertical carousel looks broken. Brand intros waste the three seconds. Health, efficacy and comparative claims are policy violations here too.
Rights matter. A creator's affiliate video is theirs; using it on your listing needs a usage license, which is easy to write into the collaboration offer and hard to get after the fact. The creator collaboration guide covers the language. For a listing video shot in-house, the UGC at scale guide covers producing it without a studio.
Description And Attributes
There are no bullets on TikTok Shop. The description is one block, at least 80 characters for the tier (or an image in it), with TikTok's best-practice guidance at 500 characters or more, covering features, uses, characteristics and accurate measurements. It sits below the fold and most buyers never read it. It still matters for three reasons: the tier, search, and the minority of buyers who are the most skeptical and the most likely to return.
Attributes are the part that gates the tier, and they are also what TikTok's search and recommendation systems read as structured facts. Fill every field the category offers, even the ones marked optional: material, scent, skin type, size, capacity, count, intended use. Package weight and dimensions at the SKU level are required by policy and also drive the shipping calculation, so a wrong weight is both a compliance problem and a margin problem.
The TikTok search side has its own rules that overlap with the assistant-style search TikTok has been building; the TikTok AI search guide covers how attribute completeness feeds it.
Variations, Pricing Display And Bundles
Three structural decisions that Amazon sellers make on autopilot and should make deliberately here.
Group variations under one listing
TikTok's policy asks for all color, size and flavor options grouped under one listing. It also concentrates reviews, sold count and creator attribution on one card rather than splitting them across five. The exception is a variant with a different use case that deserves its own creator videos; that can stand alone.
Price display is part of the listing
The card shows price, and often a strikethrough and a sold count. TikTok's deceptive pricing rules prohibit inflating a list price to show a discount; the strikethrough has to reflect a real prior price. Set the list price once, honestly, and let promotions come from platform tools (flash sales, coupons) rather than from editing the list price up and down, which also resets the 14-day price history that LIVE flash sales are checked against.
Bundles are separate listings with their own tier
A two-pack or a kit is its own product, with its own five images, title, description and attributes. It is worth the work because it lifts average order value against seller-paid shipping, and because a bundle has no discount history, which makes it the cleanest product to promote. Do not create a bundle listing with two images and a copied title; it will sit at Fair and never be shown. The Amazon data for TikTok Shop guide covers using your Amazon variation and bundle data to decide which to build.
Reviews As A Listing Element
On TikTok Shop, reviews are on the card (count and rating), on the half-sheet (a rotating quote), and in search (photo and video reviews surface). Review velocity, a steady stream of recent reviews, is a stronger signal than the total, and photo and video reviews carry more weight than text. Treat the review flow as part of the listing build.
- Request after delivery, once, through TikTok's own tools. Off-platform review incentives violate policy.
- Ask for a photo or a video in the request. A photo review is a listing image you did not have to shoot, and TikTok surfaces it.
- Respond to every review, briefly, by name. Responses are visible and read as part of the listing's text.
- Watch the first 20. A baseline of around 20 reviews above 4.5 is where the card starts to carry itself; before that, creator videos are doing all the social proof.
- Read one-star reviews as listing bugs. "Smaller than expected" means slot three failed. "Did not know it was unscented" means the title's first segment failed. Fix the listing; the customer was right.

Book A CallCompliance: What Gets A Listing Pulled
From TikTok's product listing policy and what we see in client accounts, in rough order of frequency.
| Violation | Where It Shows Up | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Off-platform redirects | URLs, handles, "visit our site" in description or images | Remove every external reference |
| Unauthorized TikTok references | "As seen on TikTok," "TikTok viral," TikTok logo on images | Remove; the platform's name is not yours to use |
| Misleading claims | Health, efficacy, "best," "#1," before/after imagery in regulated categories | State the feature; drop the outcome claim |
| Deceptive pricing | Inflated list price to fake a discount | Real list price; promote with platform tools |
| Missing required disclosures | Prop 65, choking hazard, age warnings absent | Add the exact statutory wording in the description |
| Character substitution | Numbers or symbols standing in for letters in titles | Plain text; it is treated as evasion |
| Major edits that change the product | Swapping the product on a listing that has reviews and creator videos | New listing; edits that change the product are prohibited |
| IP misuse | Competitor brand names in title or attributes; stock photos you do not own | Your own names and images only |
| Wrong category | Product placed in a broader or adjacent category to dodge requirements | Most specific correct category; the requirements come with it |
Removed listings are appealed through the Shop Health page in Seller Center. The appeal that works is the one that fixes the listing first and then explains what changed; arguing the policy does not.
The 90-Minute Listing Audit
The audit is in that order because the tier is the cheapest fix with the largest effect, and the card is what buyers see. Most listings we audit are capped at Fair by one empty attribute or a fourth image that should have been a fifth, and the owner has been rewriting the description for a month.
The counterweight, since we sell this work: a TikTok Shop listing with the tier at Good, a recognizable card and a video in the slot does not need agency-grade photography to convert. Creator content carries the persuasion. The listing's job is to confirm and comply, and that is a 90-minute job per product if you have the images. Spend the studio money when the product is already selling and the card is the bottleneck, and the honest way to find that out is the one-star reviews.
What To Remember
- A TikTok Shop listing is seen first as a product card under a creator's video: main image, about 35 characters of title, price and social proof. Optimize what survives that crop.
- TikTok scores listings into Poor, Fair or Good and the tier gates distribution; fewer than five images or a missing category attribute caps a listing at Fair regardless of the copy.
- Titles allow 25 to 200 characters, so front-load product type, defining attribute and size, keep brand after that unless it is the search term, and never use clickbait or substituted characters.
- The main image follows Amazon's rules with a harder frame fill and a 3:4 option; recognition at thumbnail size matters more than beauty.
- Fill five to nine slots in a fixed order: in-use, scale, detail, one benefit graphic, box contents, variants, specs; no collages, no text on the main, disclosure on any AI-generated image.
- The one listing video slot is the most-skipped element; fill it with a rights-cleared vertical re-cut of your best creator video, 15 to 60 seconds.
- Reviews are a listing element and a ranking input; velocity and photo reviews matter more than totals, and one-star reviews are listing bugs to fix.
