Two numbers can both be true and point in opposite directions. That is the entire story of AI search for local businesses in 2026.
Ask a marketing consultant whether ChatGPT is replacing Google for local search and you will get one of two confident answers, depending entirely on which statistic they read most recently. One camp points at adoption curves and tells you the shift is already over. The other points at referral volume and tells you it is a rounding error you can safely ignore for another two years.
Both camps are citing real data. Both are drawing the wrong conclusion from it, because the volume question and the value question have genuinely different answers, and a local business needs to act on both at once.
This post is the honest version, with the sources listed at the bottom so you can check the work yourself. No hype, no dismissal.
AI referral session — a website visit that originated from a link inside an AI assistant's answer. Distinct from AI visibility, which is being named in an answer whether or not anyone clicks. Most local AI value shows up as visibility rather than referral, which is precisely why referral numbers alone give a misleading picture of the channel.
The Short Answer and the Honest Caveat
Is ChatGPT replacing Google for local search? No. Not in 2026, not by volume, not close. Google still sends roughly 190 website visitors for every single visitor ChatGPT sends, and for most businesses AI referrals amount to something like one percent of total site traffic as of mid-2026. Anyone telling a plumber to reallocate their local SEO budget into AI optimization is giving bad advice.
Here is the caveat that makes the answer complicated. The share of consumers using generative AI to find local businesses climbed from roughly 6% to 45% inside a single year, according to BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey. Google's AI Overviews now trigger on something like 40% of local-intent queries, which means a large fraction of "Google" local search is already an AI-generated answer rather than a list of links. And the businesses being named in those answers are a tiny, tightly filtered subset.
So the honest framing is not replacement. It is bifurcation. Local discovery now runs on two parallel rails, one enormous and one small, and being excellent on the first rail does not put you on the second one.
Research cited across the 2026 local search literature puts the overlap between businesses that win Google's Map Pack and businesses that AI tools recommend at around 45%. More than half the businesses ranking in the local top three are effectively invisible to an AI assistant answering the same question. Your Google ranking does not transfer.
What the Adoption Data Actually Shows
Adoption is the strongest part of the bull case, and it is genuinely striking.
- Consumer use of AI for local recommendations went from roughly 6% to 45% in twelve months per BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey. That is a 7.5x increase in a single year, which is a faster behavior shift than mobile search produced at its peak.
- Roughly a third of the US population is expected to use generative AI search this year, per eMarketer estimates cited across the 2026 local search reporting.
- AI chatbot sessions have been roughly doubling year over year since 2024, reaching well over a billion monthly visits by 2026.
- Google's AI Overviews appear on approximately 40% of local-intent queries, reaching a user base measured in the billions monthly.
The thing to notice is that these are usage numbers, not referral numbers. Someone asking ChatGPT for a roofer counts in the 45%. Whether they click through to a website, call a number they were shown, or simply remember the name and search it later — none of that shows up as an AI referral in your analytics. This gap between usage and measurable referral is the single most misunderstood thing in the entire debate.
Why usage growth outpaces referral growth
AI answers are designed to resolve the question in the interface. When someone asks for a local plumber and gets three names with phone numbers and a sentence about each, the assistant has already done the job. The click is optional. For informational ecommerce queries the click is often necessary; for local service queries it frequently is not, because the next action is a phone call, not a page view.
The Volume Gap Is Still Enormous
Now the bear case, which is equally real and gets ignored by people selling AI optimization retainers.

A 1,000% growth rate on a channel delivering twelve visits a month is still twelve visits a month becoming a hundred and thirty. That is worth having. It is not worth reorganizing your marketing around, and any vendor presenting growth percentages without absolute numbers is managing your perception rather than informing your decision.
Percentage growth without base numbers is the most common way AI search services oversell the channel. Always ask for absolute session counts alongside any growth figure. If a vendor cannot or will not give you both, you are being sold a narrative rather than a channel.
The Visibility Gap: 1.2% Versus 35.9%
This is the finding that should genuinely concern local operators, and it comes from the largest dataset available on the question.
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index analyzed more than 350,000 business locations and found that ChatGPT recommended roughly 1.2% of them, compared with 35.9% of the same set appearing in Google's local 3-pack. That is not a small difference in degree. Search Engine Land characterized AI local visibility as up to thirty times harder than ranking on Google.
Why AI is so much more selective
Google's local pack is a ranked list — it has three slots and it fills them, every time, for every query, in every market. There is always a top three. An AI assistant has no obligation to name anyone. If the corroborating data about businesses in a category and market is thin, contradictory, or stale, the model can and does answer generically, telling the user how to evaluate a contractor rather than naming one.
That is the mechanism behind the selectivity. AI is not choosing three winners from a ranked list. It is deciding whether it has enough corroborated information to be confident enough to recommend anyone at all — and the same research indicates that NAP and hours inaccuracies are penalized harder by AI engines than by the Map Pack.
Google's local pack always has a top three. An AI assistant has no obligation to name anyone at all. That single structural difference explains almost the entire visibility gap.

The Conversion Gap and Why It Exists
Here is where the small channel earns its attention. AI referral sessions convert dramatically better than organic search sessions, and the effect has strengthened over time.
- Seer Interactive measured ChatGPT referral traffic converting at roughly 15.9% against about 1.76% for Google organic — close to a ninefold difference. Perplexity traffic landed near 10.5%.
- An analysis of 94 ecommerce sites found ChatGPT traffic converting roughly 31% higher than non-branded organic search by mid-2026.
- Adobe reported that during the 2025 holiday season, generative AI traffic converted about 31% higher and drove roughly 32% more revenue per visit than non-AI traffic.
- Notably, this reversed a prior pattern — in early 2025 AI traffic underperformed organic. The flip happened inside about twelve months.
The mechanism is pre-selling
When Google returns ten links and three ads, the visitor arrives comparison-shopping. They are one tab among six. When an AI names two businesses and explains why, the visitor arrives having already been given a recommendation by a source they are treating as advisory rather than promotional. The evaluation happened before the click.
For a local service business this effect is amplified, because local queries are near-transactional to begin with. Somebody asking an AI for an emergency electrician is not researching. They have a problem right now.
The honest counterweight
Some of this conversion advantage is an attribution artifact rather than a pure quality difference. AI-referred visitors skew toward later-funnel intent partly because earlier-funnel AI interactions never produce a click at all. You are measuring the converting slice of AI usage and comparing it against all of organic search. The effect is real, but it is smaller than the raw ratio implies.
Which Engines Actually Send Local Traffic
The AI referral mix is shifting faster than most reporting reflects, and optimizing for "ChatGPT" as though it were the whole channel is already outdated.
One 2026 analysis measuring AI referral sessions across a brand panel found ChatGPT's share of measurable AI referrals had fallen from roughly 89% in mid-2025 to about 63% by the March–April 2026 window, with Claude near 18.5%, Gemini near 10.6%, Perplexity near 7.3%, and Copilot holding around 4%. Other datasets weighted toward consumer and local queries still put ChatGPT closer to three-quarters of AI-driven visits.
Still the largest single source of AI referral volume, though its share is falling as competitors mature. Appends campaign parameters to citation links, so it is the most measurable engine in GA4.
Reaches by far the most raw users because it sits inside Google results, triggering on around 40% of local queries. Attributed as Organic Search, not AI, which hides its true footprint.
Smaller volume, strong conversion, and the most transparent about sources. Excluded from Google's native AI channel definition, so it lands in Referral unless you build a custom rule.
Claude's referral share grew sharply through early 2026. Gemini matters disproportionately for Android and Google-ecosystem users. Neither typically appends campaign parameters.
The strategic conclusion is not to pick an engine. The corroboration signals that get you cited — complete business data, review depth, third-party mentions — work across all of them simultaneously. Why Every Number Here Understates Reality
This is the part almost nobody accounts for, and it changes how you should read every figure above.
A large share of AI-referred traffic arrives with no referrer header at all. Independent 2026 analyses of AI referral sessions put the no-referrer share at somewhere between roughly a third and, in some mobile-heavy samples, considerably more. One analysis across several hundred thousand sessions in April 2026 measured about 35.7% of AI traffic arriving with no referrer whatsoever.
Three separate mechanisms cause this
- In-app browsers. Links opened inside the ChatGPT mobile apps launch in an embedded web view, and the handoff commonly drops the referrer header entirely.
- Copy and paste. Users frequently copy a business name or URL out of an answer rather than clicking. That visit is indistinguishable from someone typing your domain from memory.
- Link attributes and platform behavior. Some platforms strip referrers by policy. ChatGPT has appended campaign parameters to citation links since 2025, which is why it is the one AI source most properties can already see — Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini generally do not, so they depend entirely on the referrer surviving.
All of that untracked traffic lands in Direct. Which means your Direct traffic line is the best available proxy for the AI traffic you cannot see. If Direct sessions have climbed substantially without a matching increase in brand search volume or offline campaign activity, a meaningful portion of that is probably AI referral.
For local businesses this undercount is worse than average, because the most common conversion action is a phone call from a number displayed in the answer — which produces no website session at all, referrer or otherwise. Call tracking, not analytics, is where a large share of local AI value actually surfaces.
GA4's AI Assistants Channel and Its Limits
In May 2026 Google added a native AI Assistants channel to the GA4 default channel group. It requires no setup: qualifying visits from recognized AI sources are automatically assigned the medium ai-assistant and grouped into their own channel. This is a genuine improvement over the previous situation, where AI traffic scattered across Referral, Organic Search, and Direct with no way to separate it.
It is also incomplete in four specific ways you need to know before you put the number in front of anyone.

Build the custom channel group anyway
In GA4, go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups. Copy the default group to create a new one. Add a channel with a condition matching session source against a regex covering the engines that matter, then drag that channel above Referral in the ordering. GA4 evaluates channel rules top down — if an AI source hits the Referral rule first, it gets miscategorized, and rule order rather than regex is the usual reason a freshly built group still shows AI traffic under Referral.

Where AI Genuinely Wins For Local
Not all local queries behave the same. AI has taken clear ground in some and almost none in others.
- Vetting and comparison queries. "Which of these three contractors should I go with" is a synthesis task, and it is exactly what a language model is good at. Google was never good at this.
- Diagnosis before dispatch. "My water heater is making a rumbling sound, what is it and who do I call." The AI answers the technical question and then makes the referral, which is a fundamentally better experience than a page of ads.
- Cost research. "What should a panel upgrade cost in my area" — a question the open web answers badly and evasively, and where a direct answer is genuinely valuable.
- Qualifier-heavy searches. "Licensed, insured, does emergency calls, good with older homes." Multi-constraint filtering is where conversational search meaningfully beats keyword search.
- Regulation and permitting questions. Specific, poorly covered by most local business sites, and increasingly a first touch.
The pattern: AI wins where the query needs synthesis, and loses where the query needs proximity.
Where Google Still Owns the Query
The other half of the honest answer, and the reason nobody should be moving budget wholesale.
- Near-me and proximity queries. Proximity remains the dominant ranking factor in the local pack, and Google's mapping and location infrastructure has no real equivalent in conversational AI.
- Navigational and operational queries. Hours, directions, is-it-open-now. Maps answers these instantly and reliably.
- Emergency and immediacy. When something is actively flooding, people tap the first phone number in the map pack. They do not open a chat interface.
- Visual browsing. Photos of finished work, before-and-afters, showroom images. Conversational text is a weak medium for this.
- Booking and transaction flows. Scheduling, quotes, and payment still overwhelmingly happen through the website or phone.
- Raw reach. The volume gap in section three is the whole point. Google is where the customers still are.

Stop reading industry averages and get your own number. This takes about an hour.
Step 1 — Check the native channel
In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Look for the AI Assistants channel. Set the date range to the last 90 days — going back further is pointless since the channel is not retroactive. Record sessions, engagement rate, and key events.
Step 2 — Find what the native channel misses
Change the primary dimension to Session source / medium and search the table for each engine individually: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, and any others relevant to your market. Perplexity in particular will be sitting in Referral.
Step 3 — Establish the Direct proxy
Compare Direct sessions for the last 90 days against the same period a year prior. Then compare brand search impressions in Search Console across the same windows. If Direct has grown substantially faster than brand search, that delta is your best estimate of untracked AI traffic.
Step 4 — Add call tracking
For a local business this is the step that matters most. A dedicated tracking number on your website, plus asking every inbound caller how they found you, will surface AI referrals that never touch analytics. "ChatGPT recommended you" is now a real answer people give, and you will only hear it if somebody asks.
Step 5 — Sample your visibility separately
Referral data tells you about clicks. It tells you nothing about whether you are being named in answers that do not produce clicks — which for local is most of them. Run a fixed prompt set across the major engines quarterly and log whether you appear. Several AI visibility tracking tools automate this if you would rather not do it manually.

The allocation that makes sense
For most local service businesses in 2026, the right move is not a separate AI budget line. It is a shift in emphasis within existing local marketing spend — away from link acquisition and toward business data accuracy, review corpus depth, third-party corroboration, and content that answers real questions with real specifics. Every one of those investments pays into both channels at once.
The one genuinely new line item is measurement. Budget a few hours a quarter for visibility sampling and get call tracking in place. Without those, you are guessing about a channel that converts nine times better than the one you already measure obsessively.
